What we do
Three services — and every trade a build needs inside them.
Lignum Build takes on whole projects: a new house from the ground up, an existing property refurbished or restored, and the bespoke joinery that finishes both. Bricklaying, plastering, plumbing, tiling and electrical work are carried out by our own team. Serving St Albans, Harpenden and Hertfordshire.

01
New Build, Refurbishment & Restoration
Ground-up design and build, or an existing house refurbished and restored to a standard it deserves
Lignum Build's own description of this service is "a complete professional service from ground up design and build to refurbishment or renovation of an existing property" — and that's the honest scope. New build, extension, loft, whole-house refurbishment or careful restoration, run by one firm from the first survey to the handover.

02
Bespoke Joinery & Carpentry
Made for the room it goes in — the part of the firm the name was chosen for
In their own words: "We specialise in bespoke projects, let our team of highly skilled professional craftsmen make your vision a reality." Lignum is Latin for timber, and bespoke joinery is the part of the business the name was chosen for — work made to the millimetre for the room it's going into.

03
Bricklaying, Plastering, Plumbing, Tiling & Electrical
Every trade a build needs, carried by one firm and one programme
Lignum Build's own site puts it plainly: the firm "can provide all aspects of general construction including plumbing and electrical by our team of highly experienced professionals". In practice that means you're not the one coordinating five separate subcontractors around each other's delays.
More about thisThe work in practice
The project types those three services cover.
A homeowner rarely rings up asking for “refurbishment” — they ring about a loft, a knock-through or a bathroom. These are the jobs that sit inside the services above, including the three that Lignum Build's own clients have written about by name.
Internal reconfiguration & structural steels
Knocking a plan about so a house works properly — walls out, steel beams in, openings formed and everything around them made good. A Harpenden client's reconfiguration involved a good number of steels plus relocating an electrical supply, which is the kind of complication we'd rather handle than avoid.
Loft conversions
Turning unused roof space into rooms a family can actually live in — floor structure, stairs, dormers or rooflights, insulation, plaster and the joinery that makes the awkward angles feel deliberate. One Markyate loft was converted for two girls during lockdown and completed on time.
Bathroom transformations
A bathroom taken back to the walls and rebuilt: first fix plumbing and electrics, tanking, tiling, sanitaryware and the cabinetry. Tiling and plumbing are our own trades, so the tile setting-out and the pipework are decided together rather than argued about.
Ground-up design & build
In Lignum Build's own words, "a complete professional service from ground up design and build" — taking a plot or a set of drawings through groundwork, structure, envelope and fit-out to a finished house.
Restoration of older properties
Hertfordshire has a lot of houses worth keeping. Restoration work means repairing rather than replacing where the original is better — sound masonry, honest plaster repairs, and joinery copied from what's already there.
Extensions & knock-throughs
Single and double-storey extensions, rear knock-throughs and garden-room links, with the structural drawings, building control sign-off and the sequencing of every trade handled by one firm.
